I love schadenfreude more than most and would love to see this have a lasting impact on the Nats, but in the end it probably won't. Assuming the deal doesn't happen the Sox are debately no better than they were this morning on the field, significantly more restricted financially for 2011, lost their (cost controlled for 6 more season) top prospect, and might have a bit of a black cloud story hanging over the locker room the rest of the year.

    Just sucks.

I read Olney's tweets. Rizzo is a complete hack if it's true. It's not like he even gets anything out of his backpedaling. He just gets to keep Dunn for 2.5 months of .400 baseball.

Christ, is anything in DC worth a shit?

Wonder if as the deadline approaches, and no one else pays the price the Nats are looking for, if maybe Jackson to DC becomes viable again.

I told you these guys today are hacks. They don't know how to value their own players and negotiate reasonably, keep their mouths shut (especially the younger ones). And I think in this day and age you can closely speculate the real goings-on based on all these Tweets. This is 2010; no one keeps their mouth shut and everything is out there. Maybe this will be the last time we last-minute scramble to band aid yet another cheap product. Deadline deals are always too little too late if they fill a major need instead of being just a supplementary piece. From now on, just put a god damn real team on the fuckin' field in April and use the deadline to get a fucking LOOGY or a quality bench bat.

This is a neverending cycle that depletes the farm system and doesn't equal any kind of championships.

Can't really say that about KW because he's never been on the sell-side.

Oh, I thought it was from the buying side. Misread the "last minute scramble to band aid yet another cheap product" phrase. I thought the "cheap" phrase was referencing GM's going cheap at certain positions then scrambling to find a worthy replacement when those cheap solutions suck, yada yada yada.

While it is shitty for Rizzo to back out of a deal, I think KW has to take the blame for jumping the gun and not engineering a 3 team deal. How many times does someone get flipped in a MLB trade anyway? Not often from what I remember, Piazza that one year he was on the Marlins for like a week. Usually the 3 team trade is the route these things go.
We don't have to have the pressure of scoring 30 every night or shooting a high percentage or logging long minutes and worrying about our team suffering because of that.

I'll give you that. I don't know why they didn't just do a 3 team deal.

That was my worry with Jackson, we got it to sweeten up the deal for Dunn but in the hand we're left with an $8 million mediocre "veteran" pitcher.

Kenny has had some curious moments in his tenure, but if this is all true, egg is most definitely on his face. Sure, Rizzo is a cockhold, but what TS said, THIS IS EXACTLY why there are 3-team deals. I have a feeling we'll still see Dunn on the Sox by this afternoon, but I also think we're stuck with Jackson. Who knows? Perhaps now that he's in a real baseball city he'll turn it around.

I tend to agree. While it would be nice to have a BigBoy™ DH, that extra arm will pay dividends. And clearly the coaches see enough upside to risk taking Jackson solo. So I am down with it.

For whatever reason I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the trade.

    Buster Olney:
Heard this: Adam Dunn hit the waiver wire today, giving teams 48 hours to place claims on the slugger -- and the wide expectation is that multiple NL teams will put in a claim on him -- Rockies? Giants? -- and that there is no chance that AL teams like the Rays or White Sox or Yankees ever get a shot at Dunn, who is working on his seventh straight year of 38 or more homers.

And then they'll pull him back and demand a ton of players in a trade for him again. What's the point?

That makes no sense. If Rizzo wants guys like Beckham, they'd have to get through waivers too, which they wouldn't. Does he think Jonathan Sanchez or Matt Garza is going to clear?

I cut Buster a little short:

What this means about Dunn is that if he's going to be moved -- and that seems unlikely -- it'll happen in the next 72 hours.

Dangling Dunn to see what interest is out there makes no sense, considering teams obviously are interested in him. Sounds like Rizzo just has no fucking clue what he's doing, which is more or less what KW implied.

The only thing that makes sense is maybe he had something going with a team who had prospects he wanted that didn't need to clear waivers to be moved, but they couldn't finalize on Saturday. So they decide to see if Dunn gets to that team and try again.

Yep, so unless someone has guys not on their 40 man equivalent to Beckham or Matt Garza, probably nothing's going to happen.
