Well, financially, they can pay Jenks $7.5M with Thornton as the set up guy, or move Jenks and pay another set up guy $2M. I think you have to explore a trade. If no one offers anything acceptable, then you see how he reports next year.

If he can give us a 2010 like he performed in his 2 months at the end of this year, the Sox will have a solid 1-5 rotation. That is a good thing. And if he falters, you have Hudson waiting in the wings.
Garcia = Hernandez?
Hudson = McCarthy?
2010 = 2005????!!!!?!?!!!!!111?!11!/!!!

The bullpen will have Hudson, Carrasco, Pena, Linebrink, and Thornton. They need to pick up a lefty or two if Jenks gets traded.
I just hope they can get anything out of Batting Practice Linebrink and Homerun Derby Pena next year.
Freddy can outperform 2005 El Duque. His ERA that year was like 5.12, which is one reason I've said the 5th starter isn't that important if your 1-4 are set.
However, I didn't think Freddy could pitch nearly as well as he did the last month.
Freddy has never seemed like a very hard worker which is what you need to be at his age.
And Hernandez was pretty solid for the first half of the year. Coincidentally that's when the team was dominant. They kind of meandered in the second half without a good 5th and with Pods injured and fruity.

2010 Payroll:
Peavy - 15
Buehrle - 14
Konerko - 12
Rios - 9.7
Pierzynski - 6.25
Linebrink - 5
Floyd - 2.75
Thornton - 2.25
Viciedo - 1.25
Ramirez - 1.1
Garcia - 1 (3 mil with incentives)
Dye - 1 (option buyout)
These 12 players add up to 71.3 million (minimum).
Arbitration eligible: Danks, Quentin, Jenks, Carrasco, Pena, and Wise
I don't see how they'll be able to sign a big free agent like Figgins. Rios took all that cash.
Team salary in 08 was around 110, no?
Go back up to that level again. Konerko, AJ, Buehrle, and Linebrink all won't be here past 2011.
It's called take a chance on a team that might do a lot of damage. Or just sit on your ass and expect people to buy season tickets for a team that didn't improve a team that finished below .500.

I wonder if the Sox could get an NL team to make a deal for Linebrink. Maybe eat half the salary and take a bag of balls in return. He had much more success in the NL than the AL.

I think Linebrink and Pena will be better pitchers with the improved starting rotation. I think they're stuck with that money anyway. He's making 5.5 in 2011.
He hasn't really been all that good since 2005. That year he was awesome, 1.83 ERA, 1.059 WHIP. Since then he has been sort of meh.
There might be something to that for Linebrink. His first half numbers were good this year, but he fell apart as the year went along.
Pena was just a bad idea from the start.

Now that we have our first hint that KW will be going extra cheap, Ima slightly revise the projection to:
C - Pierzynski, Flowers, Castro
1B - Konerko, Kotsay
2B - Getz, Nix
SS - Ramirez, ______ (trade or free agent)
3B - Beckham
CF - Rios, ______ (trade or free agent)
RF - Quentin
LF - Podsednik
DH - rotation
SP - Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Garcia
RP - Thornton, Linebrink, Pena, Carrassco, Williams, ______ (Hudson, Torres, Nunez, or trade for LHP)
Shitty lineup, bad defense, and a sketchy pen.

Getz can return to what? Continuing to be really, really average at all facets of the game?

Could Rios lead off?
whitesox901 added 61 Minutes and 29 Seconds later...
Also, why not look to the Japan Leagues. We got Iguchi and Shingo that way. Iguchi was pretty solid in 05 and 06, but was part of the 07 team slump and Takatsu was good until his mid season collapse in 2005.
Besides. Who doesn't seriously miss that gong?

Ifis healthy and fully recovered, i think we will see a close resemblance to his potential MVP year.
Ramirez is apparently that guy who starts off shit slow but then becomes respectable down the stretch
Rios im confident will play as how optimistic people figure him to be
As for 901, as of now, no real prospects are coming from Japan this year to be signed that I know of.

Noted, but IIRC, I don't remember people being ZOMG!!11!1!1 we has to getz us some Iguchi going into 2005 (and Shingo 04), I always thought Kenny's scouts just saw him and KW signed him in the blue, but I wasn't quite the super fan then (aka message border) so all my Sox news I got from their website.

With little money left, KW will look to add low-priced options at the 3 bolded positions. He may trade Jenks to free up some more cash.
